Overview

Each year, over 9,000 students transfer to UC Davis, many without credit for equivalent lower-division courses that they took at their previous institution, extending their time to graduate. As part of a group project in a consulting class, I designed a concept UI for a scheduling platform where transfer students can book proctored test-out exams, helping them graduate on time.

What We Did

  • User Research & Frustrations

  • Analysis on current processes + goals + culture from UC Davis & Community Colleges

  • Designed processes aid the transfer experience from ground up

  • User Centered Design approach for aiding technology

For most of the quarter, we focused on learning about our audience - Transfer Students & UC Davis Admissions. After conducting interviews with counselors, transfer students, and prospective transfer students, we found that our main problems were:

58%

of incoming UC Davis transfer students submit at least one course equivalency request, but 80% of requests are denied. Students often need to retake courses to meet degree requirements.

35%

of students transferring as juniors feel behind, with 70% focusing on adjusting to their new environment and missing out on internship opportunities.

🫥

Large-scale community colleges often provide generalized advice, making it difficult for students to receive tailored guidance for their specific needs.

📚

The University of California does not have an integrated major course articulation system, creating challenges for community college students who wish to apply to multiple UC campuses.

Solution Building

Although we had proposed multiple solutions to ease transfer student transitions, I developed a proof-of-concept demo showcasing one key option—allowing students to test out of specific courses during demo day.

Ideation

Working through the design, I aimed to make it as simple as possible using design systems from popular learning management softwares while honoring design elements set in place by UC Davis.

Final Solution

For our final presentation, we had identified multiple pain points and had proposed multiple solutions to aid the transfer process. The following video showcases one solution involving a opt-out test feature.

We had also identified that getting a counseling appointment at large community college was difficult due to having to go through a referral process that could take days if not weeks to acquire. We sought to eliminate the process and reimagined the counseling booking process at Pasadena City College.
